A Plan

December 15, 2011

Rule # 1 of being a Work AND Home Wife is this :

Make a Plan

Because your “To Do List” is probably long and varied, you need a plan to get everything accomplished.

For example, my list usually looks something like this:

What that means is that I, as a Work AND Home Wife, have to be a wise time manager as well as a diligent worker.  There’s not a lot that can be put off until “later” because later is already booked for this week.

Proverbs 31 says “She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household”  and  “She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”

Being a wife is not for the lazy.

It is necessary, especially for a working housewife, to be looking “to the ways of her household” to know what needs to be done and how it will be accomplished.  Sometimes you have to get up early and stay up late to get everything done, and you can’t be idle.  But there are ways to simplify your responsibilities.

Step 1: Get a planner.

Whether you purchase a fancy notebook planner that you like (and that you will use) or type everything into an online calendar (or even your cell phone!) It’s important to have ONE place where you keep a list of all your appointments and your To-Do List.

There are endless choices at the store for these type of notebooks, or just google “Calendar” or “To Do List” and you can find something that you like.

It could look like this:

Or this:

Or this:

And it could have a cute design like one of these:

The only thing that matters is you choose something that is functional for YOU and that you WILL use.  Train yourself to write down what needs to happen each day, and you might be surprised how much faster you can work when you know what is expected of you.

It can even look like my fancy-schmancy legal pad 🙂

Step 2: Make a plan

When I have a long to-do list it is very easy for me to become overwhelmed and not to anything at all.  The only thing to do is make a plan.  Usually the plan is just to start with one thing on the list and work until it is finished, and then do something else on the list.  It also helps to prioritize and do the most important things first, and realize that sometimes there are things that just can’t be done today.  Relax, and get started:-)

So create your list of things that need to be accomplished in one week.  Then decide which day you will accomplish each task and put that on your calendar.  And stick to your list! If you don’t do something on the assigned day, it gets moved to the next day, so don’t put it off.

I know that you may not consider yourself an “Organized Person”.  But having a to-do list and making a plan for accomplishing it is not about being organized.  It’s about being diligent.  If you are willing to push yourself and to diligently work through this process, you can accomplish this.  And then people might actually think you are an organized person (or you might actually become one)!
